Because smoking is an addiction not easy to give up, and the smokers requires support and guidance. Even more than that, every patient needs to know that there are different ways of stop smoking. Known as NRT, the nicotine replacement therapy is one of the most effective way of stop smoking.

This therapy helps the person by providing low amounts of nicotine into his body through gums, inhalers or patches. So, whenever a person feels like smoking he bites or chews the nicotine gum which releases a small amount of nicotine into the body, producing an effect similar to a smoke. Over the course of the therapy the withdrawal symptoms gradually cease.

Another way to stop smoking is taking Zyban. Zyban is a drug that releases endorphins in the body and creates a feeling of well-being, similar to the smoking pleasure. The drug is recommended to be taken only under medical supervision and it is recommended to be avoided by people who suffer from cardiac disorders, diabetes, anorexia or liver disorders. Pregnant women and epileptics are also recommended to stay away from the drug. The percentage of relapse is low and the success rate of using Zyban as a therapeutic aid is very high.

The combination therapy is an alternative method, that uses both NRT and Zyban as means to help smokers quit. Important components of the therapy are also the counseling sessions that are held regularly. The patient can use NRT in the beginning of the program and switch to Zyban for the rest of the course. (dose varies by individual). The combination therapy commonly achieves a success rate of 50%.

Helping an individual stay off cigarettes permanently requires most of all, emotional counseling in the opinions of some. The Smokenders international group helps a person grow emotionally stronger by their seven sessions. They also recommend that whenever a person feels like smoking, he should consult a counselor immediately.
